What is the exact purpose of winter habitat
projects?
The exact purpose of winter habitat projects is to
restore the ability of a given waterfowl conservation region (e.g., the MAV or
Gulf Coast) to provide food for the estimated number of waterfowl that wintered
in the region in the mid-1970s (target population levels). DU and its partners are simply trying to
provide enough foraging habitat in each conservation region to meet the needs
of waterfowl that may winter there when populations reach NAWMP goals and
objectives. This habitat is provided to
give waterfowl the option to make migration and winter movements as they have
done historically, but might not otherwise be able to do given the large scale
habitat loss and degradation that occurred in these traditional migration and
winter areas.
